ROOTED IN "GOODNESS"
To cultivate the fruit of goodness in our lives through a spirit of generosity.
Goodness is the generosity that FLOWS from the heart that is kind.
What is the most generous gift you’ve ever received?
What is the most generous gift you’ve ever given?
REFLECTING ON THE SERMON
Did Pastor Chris say anything that spoke to you during the sermon?
Where you challenged by anything?
What did you learn about peace that you previously did not know?
GOING DEEPER IN THE SCRIPTURE
Read Matthew 19:16-26
The young man who Jesus encounters in this passage has great wealth and has kept all the commandments, but still feels he lacks what he needs for eternal life. In Mark’s gospel (Mark 10:21), Jesus tells the young man that he lacks one thing. What was the young man lacking? What was the one thing he needed to be “perfect?”
When Jesus tells him to sell his possessions, give the money to the poor, and follow Him, the young man walks away sad. Why did Jesus’ response cause the young man to walk away sad? What are the things in life today that can hold someone back from being fully committed to Jesus and receiving all that God has for them?
When the young man walks away, Jesus tells His disciples that it is hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven. Why is it hard?
Read 2 Corinthians 9:6-8
Paul challenges the Corinthian believers to give based on what on what is in their hearts and not to give reluctantly, but cheerfully. He makes it clear that when it comes to giving, both thought and attitude count. Why is the attitude with which we give important?
Among other things, goodness as a fruit of the Spirit can mean generosity. What happens in our lives when we are generous in our giving? How does our generosity affect our work for God’s kingdom?
In verse 10 of this same passage, Paul says that our generosity not only supplies the needs of God’s people, but also that it overflows in “many expressions of thanks to God.” How does our generosity express our thanks to God? How is our generosity tied to worship?
MAKE IT PERSONAL
As you reflect on the story of the rich young man in Matthew 19, is there anything in your life that keeps you from receiving all that God has for you?
God is a great giver. In fact, no one can out give God. In what ways have you experienced God’s generosity in your life? 2 Corinthians 9:6 tells us that when we sow generously we will also reap generously. What impact has your own generosity had on your life? On your faith?
LIVE IT OUT! ACT IT OUT!
We are being challenged this week to cultivate the fruit of goodness in our lives by growing in generosity. Take time to reflect on where you are in your own generosity and in what ways or areas you sense God leading you to be more generous.
Take time to share prayer requests with one another pray for your needs.
