ROOTED IN "SELF-CONTROL"

6/10/18

GOAL

  • Reflect on Sunday’s message and the theme of self control, as well as the series as a whole.

BIG IDEA

  • Self-Control is fruitless without Christ’s-control of your life

CONVERSATION STARTERS

  • Imagine that you and your group are going to run a marathon. What sort of things do you need to add to your life to prepare for this challenge? What sort of things do you need to take-away from your life?

REFLECTING ON THE SERMON

  • Did Darryl Strawberry say anything that spoke to you during the sermon?

  • Where you challenged by anything that he shared?

  • Did you learn something about self-control that you previously did not know?

GOING DEEPER IN THE SCRIPTURE

Read 1 Cor 9:24-27

  • Did Darryl Strawberry say anything that connects to this passage of Scripture?

  • In verse 25 Paul contrasts the reward of winning the race, getting a perishable wreath, with the imperishable prize of the Gospel. What are some of the perishable things we find people are running in this life? Do you find yourself being tempted by any of those things?

  • Paul desired to run in such a way so that he would not be disqualified. Reflecting on Paul’s words in 1 Corinthians and other passages, what are some of the areas that he may have been concerned about? (e.g. sex, money, power, Gal 5:19-21, 1 Timothy 3:1-13)

MAKE IT PERSONAL

  • What was your favorite (most memorable) group experience this season?

  • What sermon did you connect with the most over this season?

LIVE IT OUT! ACT IT OUT!

  • Paul discusses the discipline required to run the race of the Gospel. In the conversation starter your were challenged to prepare to run a marathon by adding and taking away things from your life. Turning to Paul’s analogy from 1 Cor 9:26-27, what spiritual disciplines do you need to develop in your life to live out the calling God has for you? What are the things you need to remove? (Group Leader’s you may want to take time to pray during this time or play some background music as people reflect and ask God for their next steps.)
